THE CHALLENGES

A bespoke single-dwelling residence in Leichhardt, designed as a fully reinforced concrete structure with a lightweight steel-framed roof and integrated concrete pool. The build required careful sequencing of structural systems with site retaining, hydrostatic loading, and architectural interfaces.

The constrained Inner West site introduced additional excavation, access, and coordination considerations typical of established residential streetscapes, demanding a high standard of documentation clarity and close collaboration between the structural engineer, builder, and architectural team.

OUR APPROACH

Metric Engineering provided coordinated structural and civil design, covering raft and pad footings, conventionally reinforced ground slabs, suspended concrete slabs, and reinforced concrete walls and blade columns acting as the primary gravity and lateral system. The lightweight steel-framed roof was engineered to AS 4100 and AS/NZS 1170.2, with connections detailed for uplift and diaphragm action into the concrete substructure below.

The in-ground concrete pool was designed as a fully waterproof reinforced shell integrated with the site retaining strategy, with crack control, joint detailing, and hydrostatic and surcharge loads addressed in coordination with the waterproofing and pool trades.

Design development focused on buildability and construction sequencing, ensuring that temporary works, excavation support, and permanent structural systems were aligned with realistic site staging. All documentation was prepared to AS 3600, AS 1170, AS 2870, AS 4100, and the relevant provisions of the NCC, producing clear, defensible designs suitable for efficient review by the certifier and approval authorities.

THE RESULTS

The project was supported by robust, well-documented structural and civil designs that reduced construction risk and improved clarity for the site team. The full-concrete envelope below a lightweight roof delivered a high-performance, low-maintenance home with clean architectural spans, while Metric Engineering's integrated approach supported smoother approvals and efficient on-site execution from excavation through to structural completion.
