THE CHALLENGES

An early learning centre at 331 Blaxcell Street, South Granville, is crowned with curved steel-framed shade structures wrapped in perforated mesh across its Level 1 and Level 2 outdoor play decks. The facade is as much structure as architecture: lightweight curved steelwork, wind-sensitive mesh surfaces, and connections that had to disappear into the architect's clean intent while remaining fabricable and code-compliant.

OUR APPROACH

Metric Engineering translated the architect's design intent into an engineered custom facade — structural design of the shade structures and mesh screens with wind loading assessed to AS/NZS 1170.2, member and connection design including weld capacity verification, and structural documentation developed through four progressive revisions.

The package was carried through to shop-drawing coordination: an issued-for-approval set with 3D models, BIM (IFC) files and general-arrangement drawings, worked through architect review cycles to the latest issue in July 2026.

THE RESULTS

A custom facade engineered to be built — the architect's curved mesh canopies resolved into steelwork that stands up to Sydney winds, documented from structural design through to fabrication-ready shop drawings.
